When do flights actually start at Bhogapuram airport?

17 August 2026. It is worth separating two dates that are widely conflated, because booking a trip on the wrong assumption is expensive.

What does the VTZ code shift actually mean?

VTZ is the three-letter IATA code that airlines, booking systems, baggage tags and boarding passes use to identify the airport serving Visakhapatnam. From 12:01 am on 17 August 2026, that code is reassigned: it stops pointing at the civil enclave at INS Dega and starts pointing at Bhogapuram.

This is unusual, and it creates a specific kind of confusion. In most airport changeovers, a new airport gets a new code and the distinction is obvious on the ticket. Here, the code is identical, the city name is identical, and the airline and flight number may be identical too — while the physical location moves 40-odd kilometres into a different district. A ticket that reads “Visakhapatnam (VTZ)” is correct both before and after the switch. It just means two different places.

The practical implication is that the code is not a reliable way to tell which airport you are flying from — the travel date is. On or before 16 August 2026, VTZ is INS Dega. On or after 17 August 2026, VTZ is Bhogapuram.

What happens to the old Visakhapatnam airport at INS Dega?

It stops handling scheduled commercial flights, and that change is long-term: scheduled commercial operations at the Visakhapatnam civil enclave cease for 30 years from 17 August 2026. A 30-year horizon is not a trial run, so plan on the shift being permanent. There is no announced arrangement under which scheduled airline services return to INS Dega.

Two categories of flying continue at INS Dega:

• Non-scheduled and charter operations — private jets, charters and other non-scheduled flights continue to be handled there.
• Indian Navy operations — INS Dega is an active naval air station and remains fully operational as a military airfield.

Answer first: your ticket stays valid, but you should re-confirm two things — which airport and what time.

Your ticket is a contract for a flight number on a date, and that is unaffected by an airport code being reassigned. The airline moves its operation; your booking moves with it. What genuinely can change is the timing. Airlines re-time services when they change station, because block times, turnaround patterns and slot allocations are all different at a new airport. A departure that used to leave Visakhapatnam at 6:20 am might not leave Bhogapuram at 6:20 am.

Which airlines and routes will fly from Bhogapuram?

Opening-day operations named IndiGo, Air India, Air India Express, Scoot and India One Air. IndiGo flew the first arrival from Hyderabad and the first Indian international service to Abu Dhabi; Scoot flew Singapore; Air India shifted its Visakhapatnam network, including Delhi.
