Simhachalam is the most visited temple in the region, about 42-48 km from the airport. Vizianagaram district adds Ramanarayanam and Pydithalli Ammavari, and the Srikakulam belt north of the airport holds three temples of real architectural importance: Srikurmam, Arasavalli and Sri Mukhalingam.

Simhachalam, on a hill above Visakhapatnam, is dedicated to Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha. The deity is kept covered in sandalwood paste for most of the year and revealed in its true form only at the annual Chandanotsavam, which draws enormous crowds.

Ramanarayanam on Korukonda Road, roughly 6 km from Vizianagaram town, is a modern 15-acre temple complex laid out in the shape of a bow. Salihundam, roughly two hours north near Srikakulam, occupies a hilltop above the Vamsadhara river and holds a group of stupas and monastery remains. Together the two make the point that this coast was a node on a maritime Buddhist network that reached across the Bay of Bengal, not a backwater.

How do you reach Araku Valley and Borra Caves from the airport?

Both lie inland and uphill from Visakhapatnam, so the practical route from Bhogapuram runs south-west to Anandapuram and then up through the ghats. Borra Caves are about 95-110 km from the terminal, close to three hours away; Araku Valley is 130-145 km and four to five hours.

Borra Caves, in the Ananthagiri hills, sit at about 705 m above sea level and reach depths of up to 80 m, which makes them the largest caves in India. The limestone formations took something in the order of a million years to form, and the cave floor is wet, uneven and dimly lit, so wear shoes with grip.

Araku Valley, 115-120 km from Visakhapatnam, is coffee country: tribal plantations, a coffee museum, waterfalls and cool evenings. It deserves an overnight stay rather than a punishing day trip. Ananthagiri on the way up is worth a stop for the views, and Lambasingi, off the Chintapalli road, is known as the Kashmir of Andhra and is the coldest place in the state, with December and January mornings that occasionally bring frost.

Three shapes cover almost every visitor: a stopover of a few hours, a two-night weekend, and a four-day circuit of north Andhra. Each assumes a car with a driver, which is the only realistic way to move between these sites.

One-day stopover, six to eight usable hours. Drive to Bheemunipatnam, walk the beach and the Dutch cemetery, then climb to Thotlakonda for the monastery and the sea view. Lunch in Bhimli.
