Bhogapuram is a mandal in Vizianagaram district that was farmland and fishing villages until the airport arrived, and a hotel district does not appear the moment a terminal opens. What exists instead is a ring of established towns, each 20 minutes to an hour away, and each good at something different.

What you give up is choice. Bhimli has limited late-night dining, modest shopping and only a handful of genuinely sea-facing rooms, which sell out first on weekends and holidays. If that matters more to you than the drive, look at the city. What do Rushikonda and Madhurawada offer travellers using the airport?

This is the belt for resorts and business hotels, roughly 40-50 minutes from the terminal. Rushikonda is the main resort beach on the Visakhapatnam coast, with hillside properties looking down over the bay, while Madhurawada, immediately inland, is the IT and education corridor and holds a cluster of business hotels used by corporate visitors.

Expect ₹2,500-₹8,000 a night depending on season and view. In return you get the things budget properties cannot offer: a pool, a proper multi-cuisine restaurant, a gym, reliable power backup, a travel desk that will actually organise your airport transfer, and rooms large enough for a family of four. The trade-off is the 70-95 minute airport run through Anandapuram, which is the one part of the journey that can behave unpredictably. For an afternoon or evening flight this is a non-issue. Search by town name, not by the airport. Aggregator inventory on OYO, Treebo, FabHotels and the large online travel agencies is concentrated in Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram and Bhimli, so a search for OYO rooms in Bhogapuram will return very little while a search for Vizianagaram or Bhimli returns plenty within half an hour of the terminal.

Before you confirm a budget booking, run through this list:

• Read the ten most recent reviews sorted by date rather than the headline rating. Budget properties change hands and standards drift.
