As Bhogapuram settles into its role as North Andhra’s aviation gateway, a second construction story is taking shape: how you actually get there. Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport is open — inaugurated on 1 August 2026, commercial flights from 17 August. The terminal does not sit inside Visakhapatnam. It sits on the coastal belt in Vizianagaram district, and every passenger, bag and pallet has to cross that gap.

The connectivity push now being discussed is multimodal: a planned six-lane beach corridor from Visakhapatnam to Bhogapuram, a stronger NH-16 with dedicated trumpet interchanges, and proposed Vizag Metro Rail extensions toward the airport. Those three layers are not at the same stage. Mixing them into one “world-class access” sentence is how brochures get ahead of the tarmac.

How you reach the airport today

For a flight this week, the honest answer is still the highway. NH-16 runs from Visakhapatnam through Madhurawada, Anandapuram and Tagarapuvalasa toward Bhogapuram. The airport is about 40–45 km from the city, typically an hour in dry, off-peak traffic. Taxis, app cabs, APSRTC services on the corridor and self-drive are the practical modes.

The planned beach corridor

At the centre of the longer-term picture is a planned six-lane beach corridor linking Visakhapatnam directly with Bhogapuram. The idea is a faster coastal route that also offers a distinctive run along the Bay of Bengal — an alternative to threading NH-16 through the northern suburbs.

Planned is doing a lot of work in that sentence. A coastal alignment can change drive times, tourism geography and which parcels feel “on the way to the airport”. It can also take years, attract litigation, or open in stretches. Until you can drive it, do not treat it as the default airport road, and do not buy land solely because a brochure drew a blue line along the coast.

NH-16 and trumpet interchanges

The highway you already use is being asked to carry more: originating passengers, meeters and greeters, staff shifts, and freight heading for the cargo terminal. Expansions of NH-16 and dedicated trumpet interchanges are meant to keep that mix from locking at grade-level junctions.

Trumpet interchanges matter because they separate turning traffic from the mainline. Adding another dimension are proposed extensions of Vizag Metro Rail toward the airport. If built, they would give passengers, employees and corridor commuters a dedicated public-transport link instead of leaving every trip to a car or bus on NH-16.

Metro systems are capital-heavy and politically visible. Proposals get announced earlier than alignments are frozen. For a household deciding where to live, or an investor deciding which side of a village road to buy, “metro to the airport” is only useful once there is a funded alignment, stations you can name, and a construction timetable you can audit. Until then it is optional upside, not infrastructure.

One network, three speeds

Together, these investments describe how the region wants to handle higher daily mobility if the airport grows into the gateway North Andhra is counting on. A coordinated system is the goal. Coordination is not the same as completion.
